Delta Airlines Baggage Rules: What You Need to Know

Delta Airlines Baggage Rules: What You Need to Know

Flying can be nerve-wrecking, especially when you’re unsure about the baggage rules. Delta Airlines has always managed to make everything easy, but knowing in advance will help you save extra fees. Here’s a breakdown to pack without worries.

Carry-On Baggage: Free?

Delta allows you to carry on:

  • One personal item that fits under an overheard shelf in front of you, such as a purse, backpack or laptop bag
  • One standard carry on bag that fits in an overhead bin, and does not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches.
  • Other minor items, like a jacket or an umbrella, do not count toward your carry-on baggage allowance-you can have one of each. Make sure, however, that your carryon can fit into an overhead compartment if there’s no room under your seat.

Checked Baggage: What’s the Rule?

Standard accommodation: You can check up to 2 bags. Each one should be 50 lbs (23 kg) or less, and the total dimensions no more than 62 inches (height + width + depth).

Want more bags? You can check up to 10 bags, but keep in mind Delta Connection flights only permit 4 checked bags.

Baggage Fees: How Much Is It Going to Cost?

U.S.:

  • First checked bag: $30
  • Second checked bag: $40
  • S. to/from Canada:
  • First checked bag: $30 USD/CAD
  • Second checked bag: $50 USD/CAD

Flying to an international destination? In that case, there might be a charge. Check Delta for fees by destination.

Overweight and Oversized Bags: Extra Fees

  • Overweight bags:
  • 51 – 70 lbs: $100
  • 71 – 100 lbs: $200

Oversized Bags: If your baggage size is greater than 62 inches, but less than 115 inches, you are charged as a surplus bag with $200. Sports equipment may not be checked if it measures more than 115 inches.

Sports Equipment: Special Exceptions

Delta regards sports equipment-golf clubs or skis-as normal checked bags. Only make sure that it fits in the size and weight requirements otherwise you will be charged on top of those.

Medical and Mobility Aids: No Additional Fee

If you are carrying other devices like your wheel chair or a CPAP machine, then Delta will not count them in your baggage allowance. Only make sure that the medical devices have enough power for your entire flight.

Delta’s baggage policy is pretty straightforward: so long as it fits with size and weight limits, the bag won’t incur an additional fee. Check the major website before departing to view most up-to-date information that also applies to intercontinental flights as fees vary by route.
